ThinkPad535(TP535/535E/535X) is one of the best-seller B5-sized ultraportable notebookPC in Japan.
I bought TP535 next to ThinkPad530CS at new-year bargain in 1998, and it was very easy to use. So when I gave my 1st TP535 to my wife, I got junk TP535E and have been continued to use it now.

Compared with the keyboard of ThinkPad530CS, TP535's key is soft to touch and easy to type(Someone may say "It's too soft").
There is no LCD brightness/Audio volume controller, but keyboard operation with Fn key(Brightness:Fn+Home/End, Audio volume:Fn+PgUp/PgDn).

TP535 LCD Panel is 10.4inch TFT 800x600 SVGA. It's clear ,bright(perhaps brighter than that of TransNote!) and easy to see.
It may looks weak for its narrow frame, but the tolerance of the panel is so good that it is said that it isn't broken even if you handle the LCD panel and swing the PC....(I'm doubtful for that...)
Regard to the PentiumCPU and PCI video controller, it can play MP3-audio and some MPEG-1 video files.
TP535/535E has Trident Cyber9320PCI video controller chip.
This chip has a problem in installing Windows95. The installer hang up during automatic PnP hardware detection.
This problem is avoided by making the installer not search for S3 video controllers. Please check off the detection of "S3xxxx" in the dialog of "device to be searched".
535X has nothing to do with this problem because its video controller is "NeoMagic Magicgraph128XD".

Bottom of TP535E.
TP535 that installs P54C-Pentium 133MHz doesn't have CPU fan, but this TP535 installs MMX-150MHz. So the heat increases and it needs CPU fan.
Small hole on the middle of the bottom is air and speaker hole.
CPU is on the top where there is a rubber cover(that may be for not to cause low-temperature burn on the knee when it is used laptop).

There is a HDD bazel under the palm rest.
You can change TP535's HDD much easier than TP530's.
|
  |
***How to change HDD***
Remove the battery pack, and then you can see 2 screws. loose them.
And then, a screw on the right side should be loosen.
|

 |
All the screws are loosen, You can remove palm rest.
There is a small screw in the middle part under the palm rest. Then loose it.
You can pull out HDD and bazel.
|
 |
TP535's HDD bazel can apply both HDD of "Inner hole type" and "Outer hole type", but if some HDDs are applied, the bazel might be bent. Then Plastic Spacer sheet(in black) is needed.

Back panel of TP535E.
TP535X has USB 1.1 port, but TP535/535E don't have it.
The square hole on the right side of pararell port is a reboot switch.

it can run 1-1.5hr with this Li-ion battery pack, but it often stops less than that time because of the pancture of physical fuse in the CGR17500 Li-ion cells. If the shortage of working time occur, the change of cells is effective.
(Caution!: Old Li-ion Battery cells are very dengarous for the possibility of explosion or fire with its metal lithium slug. There are no responsibility to me for any accidents that are caused by your customization on your PC's battery packs. Please do it on your own risk.)

Normal battery pack contains 9 cells of CGR17500(3pararells of 3 in-line cells). This cell is very difficult to get today. So instead of this, CGR17670 cells can get easily. Use 6 cells(3 pararells of 2 in-line cells).
The circuit connects like below;
|
 |
connect VH/VM/VL/VG terminals to each terminals on the contoroller board.
VM terminal is drawn out from that point.(in the white circle)

 |
|
 |
Even though the diameter of CGR17670 and CGR17500 is 17mm, The diameter size of CGR17670 is a little defferent from that of CGR17500, so the projection within the pack should be cut down.
Width of columns of 2 CGR17670 cells are 67mm*2=134mm, and that of 3 CGR17500 cells are 50mm*3=150mm. So you need some spacer or something to stick the cells to battery shell for installation of new cells.
CGR17670 can loads 3.6V/1.2Ah, so 2cells in pararell can load 2.4Ah. This is about same as that of 3-CGR17500 cells in paraell(830mAh*3=2.49Ah).
As wrote before, ThinkPad535E can run about 1.5hr with this customized battery pack. This is as long as that with a snormal battery pack.
